Bio: We had heard of The Stray, but are always a bit leery of roasters from Germany, as many of them roast darker than what we prefer to drink. We saw that they released an ultralight set with The Coffee Nerd, a cafe with excellent sourcing in Heidelburg. After seeing that, and chatting with a few other local people in the scene that we trust, we decided to reach out. They’ve been roasting for a while now, but have been playing with lighter profiles and eventually roasting some UL profiles. Not all their coffees are UL, but we will mostly be bringing on their UL coffees. Very excited to share this newly UL roaster from Germany with you!

Roast: ultralight. Kind of in the middle of that spectrum in terms of development.

Rest Recommendation: 6+ weeks

Why did we bring this coffee on?

Juan Pena is well known for producing some of the best mejorados in Ecuador. I find his coffees to be really fruit forward with a kind of caramel/brown sugar sweetness to then.

Tasting Notes: Green Apple, Orange, Butterscotch

What is a weekly release?

It’s a one off feature with a specific roaster. Weekly releases are separate from the subscription. This way you can try coffee from us without subscribing! We also offer some high end and ultra rare lots through this that we wouldn’t be able to feature on our subscriptions.

Do I need to subscribe to purchase the weekly release?

Nope! Weekly releases can be purchased as standalone coffees, no subscription required.

When will my weekly release order ship?

Shipping timelines vary by roaster and international transit. We send weekly email updates so you always know where your coffee is in the process. Make sure to sign up for our newsletter.

What does “presale” mean?

Our weekly releases are sold before the coffee arrives in the U.S. This allows us to source rare international roasters that don’t normally export here. They are roasted to order and we provide an ETA for each release through our newsletter.
