Special Guests - Finca Gascon Hybrid Washed Gesha - Antigua, Guatemala- 100g
Special Guests has been on our radar for a while, but we had gotten reports that they were more developed than we would like. Recently, a mutual in Canada gave us some bags from them to sample. While it is on the more developed end of what I drink, I ended up really liking the coffees. I think their approach and sourcing is really unique and we reached out after finishing the bags.
Roast Profile: Light-medium. While it is more developed, the roast profile does a good job of highlighting sweet fruit notes and juicy acidity. without coming off as 'roasty' (as long as you brew it with a lower ey recipe).
Why did we bring this coffee on?
A few years back, we had some super memorable coffees from this producer that still still out as the best Guatemalan coffees I've had. They've focused a bit more lately on processed coffees, which isn't always our thing, but we love hybrid washed coffees for the blend of cleanliness and enhanced sweetness.
"This coffee has incredible clarity, resulting in a cup of coffee that you could drink time and time again.
Finca Gascon is located in Antigua, Guatemala - founded by Gildardo Contreras, it is now overseen by his son, Felipe. It is here that they grow this Gesha varietal, which undergoes a hybrid washed process. The cherry is pulped before being fermented, then the mucilage is removed and fermented further. The combination of cherry and process results in an exceptional coffee."
Tasting notes: apple, cranberry and oolong tea
